The Clint Seymour Play Ball Fund was proud to sponsor (alongside our good friends Tim Gansrow and Pro Performance Athletics (PPA)), a baseball camp at Collins Park in North Charleston, SC on February 11, 2017. It was exceptionally well received. Every player had a memorable experience “playing with the pros.” Our unique camp was staffed by instructors with professional baseball experience, led by our founding board member and NY Mets 2B Neil Walker, who kicked off the Camp by addressing the players about our values and then engaged directly with every individual player during the Camp’s operations. Neil was joined by a dozen pro players with youth coaching experience and a dedication to providing exposure to positive role models who promote the values of our Mission. Our special guests were the baseball teams from St. John’s (Coach Layton Powers) and Burke (Coach Corey McDonald) high schools. When Neil learned in advance that their players didn’t have their own gloves, he fixed that immediately by a call to his friends at Rawlings, to whom we also extend our thanks. After Neil had personally signed every glove (and explained how to “break in” a baseball glove), the players never removed them for the next three hours. Thanks to our hundreds of contributors, our Fund will also be providing much needed equipment to these two high school programs whose coaches are so committed to keeping alive programs that are challenged by funding restrictions but who nonetheless provide opportunities for these players that transcend baseball and remain under-appreciated by the public. Special thanks to Kenny Wilkinson and his North Charleston baseball program for providing the outstanding facilities and to Sticky Fingers for treating us all to a catered lunch. We asked the Campers only to demonstrate respect and self-determination, and we would assure that they would depart a memorable event with smiles on their faces. Both promises were kept.
Our Camp was covered by all three local television stations. We are also very fond of the video embedded in this Moultrie News article of Neil handing out the gloves, as mentioned. Moultrie News also has a gallery of 86 photos that will brighten your day and re-affirm your support for Clint’s Fund.
